9 Tips to Choose a Quality Contractor

Choosing a construction company or contractor is a big deal when you’re considering making major changes to one of your most important investments – your home or business. At Home Repair, LLC, we don’t take that decision lightly. You can rest assured that your project will be a success by following these strategies to help you to choose the best contractor.

1. Know the Difference Between a General Contractor and a Roofing Contractor

Every state carries different licensing lingo and regulations. A Licensed General Contractor is trained and equipped to handle all of your repairs, whereas a Roofing Contractor can only manage your roof repair or installation. In most cases, if you need a roof repair or replacement due to storm damage, premature aging, or wear and tear, your home may have also endured interior leaks or water damage that require repairs to your interiors, baseboards, walls, paint, siding, gutters and  exteriors including patios, balconies, screened in enclosures, porches, etc. A Roofing Contractor cannot manage those repairs. A Licensed General Contractor can do it all.  We carry both roofing and general contractor licensing at Home Repair, so we can help you with all of your project needs.

2. Ensure They’re Licensed, Bonded & Insured

It’s important to choose a company that is licensed, bonded and insured. A reputable contractor holds certifications to install materials per state building codes, regulations and manufacturer’s guidelines. It’s important they also carry appropriate insurance and workers’ compensation. This is crucial to ensure you’re covered in the event of a jobsite accident at your home or business. Request a copy of the company insurance certificates and agent contact details.

3. Expertise Matters

It’s important to review how many years of experience the company has, which areas they specialize in, and to check for industry accreditations. Industry education and quality workmanship are key to the success of your project.

4. Reputation Speaks Volumes

It’s so important to review a company’s website and online Social Media channels to find out more about them. Do a Google search on the company you’re reviewing. If a company’s website doesn’t back up what they told you in person, looks sketchy, or doesn’t showcase their information clearly, you might wonder what kind of effort they’re going to put into your construction project. Detail matters. Check their Social Media platforms as well, which should be clearly linked from their website. You can find out a lot about a company with this quick search.

  • Check their website for licenses if applicable. They should be prominently displayed.
  • Make sure the company office addresses, phone #, email and contact information are clearly listed.
  • Thoroughly review the company services that are listed on their website. This will help you determine if they are a good fit for your project.
  • Look for testimonials on their website and on Social Media channels. This is an excellent way to find out real feedback from real people.
  • Check for a portfolio or photo section of work on their website. A good company will showcase their work.

5. Testimonials: Find Out What Others Are Saying

Testimonials and references are one of the BEST ways to find out if a company truly walks the talk in excellence and customer satisfaction. Find out what others are saying. Check the company’s website for testimonials. Also check their Social Media channels such as Facebook and Google to see what others are saying. A quick online search can paint a whole picture in under a minute.

6. Referrals Referrals Referrals

Referrals are always a great way to select a contractor. You can save a lot of headache and hassle when you know someone who already successfully worked with a company, whether that’s a friend, neighbor, or colleague. Actions definitely speak louder than words! If you don’t have a referral, we recommend that you select up to 3 contractors to submit bids on your project. Set up meetings with each and request a property inspection and detailed estimate with scope of work, timelines, and costs. This process can help you make your final selection. Pro-tip: Never make your selection based on price alone. Lowball pricing often means a lesser grade of materials or shoddy workmanship, or an out-of-town company who may not be around when the materials don’t hold up.

7. Material Options Are Key

Finding a construction company that offers a variety of roofing and material options to choose from is critical when you consider using their services for your project. When you choose a roofing system, you’ll naturally want it to blend well with the existing architectural style of your home or business. A quality contractor will offer a variety of roofing types, manufacturer options and warranties.

8. Inspections & Bids

A professional contractor typically offers a free exterior inspection when storm damage is involved. This is industry standard. For retail roofing and remodeling projects, some companies will provide free bids, or charge a small amount for a project bid. It’s a great way to gauge the company to see upfront and in person if they’re a good fit.

9. Hire a Local Leading Expert

It’s a horrible reality – but there are fly-by-night roofing “companies”  that come into town right after a major storm hits to capitalize on the devastation. These types cannot even be considered “companies” in many cases, which is why it’s so important to check their licensing, website, online reviews, testimonials, and reputation. Often, these unethical pop-up contractors skip town once the demand for roofing contractors has decreased, or, less often, if they’ve been caught. It’s so important to do your research first and ensure you’re working with a local, reputable company. You need a contractor that you know will be around for the long haul.
